Governor weighs up Reid term
THE Governor is awaiting advice before considering whether to grant disgraced top government prosecutor Warwick Reid a three-year reduction in sentence, which if allowed, would see him on a plane back to New Zealand in July.
Governor's spokesman Mr Mike Hanson confirmed yesterday that the Governor was considering Reid's petition, which was filed during the term of the previous governor.
Reid, 45, who was sentenced to eight years' jail for corruption in July 1990, was told by the Chief Justice that he could petition the Governor after giving evidence for the Crown, recommending that three years be deducted.
Reid, who is serving time in the security wing of the Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre, has given evidence in three trials.
He pleaded guilty to having more than $12 million worth of inexplicable assets under his control in a much publicised scandal.
He had been granted immunity from prosecution in relation to his accepting bribes and for possessing a gun, ammunition and a forged passport provided he gave full and truthful evidence in the three trials.
