Break for gifted science students

Science and technology students from local universities are eligible to compete for a US$5,000 (HK$39,000) scholarship funded by Lucent Technologies.

Winners will be invited to participate in a week-long Global Science Scholars Summit at the company's headquarters in New Jersey, United States.

They will also have the opportunity to do an internship following their first year at university.

The Global Science Scholars programme was launched in Hong Kong last week as part of a world wide bid to encourage excellence in science and technology by supporting students studying these subjects at universities.

The competition, which is being funded by the Lucent Technologies Foundation, is open to outstanding first-year students enrolled in science and/or technology degree programmes at Chinese University, City University, Baptist University, Polytechnic University, the University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong and the Open University.

'We aim to recognise and nur ture high-potential students who will help shape the future of our world,' Mike Butcher, president and CEO of Lucent Technologies Asia/Pacific, said. 'We want to provide talented students in science and technology with an opportunity to see how those skills are put to work in hi-tech industries.' The deadline for applications is April 15 and award winners will be announced at the end of May.

The competition will be managed by the Institute of International Education, a New York-based non-profit organisation.
