Peak homes evacuated after 163kg bomb found

A NUMBER of Peak residents were evacuated last night after a 163kg World War II artillery shell was unearthed from a construction site on Pollock's Path.

A worker at the construction site discovered the 91cm-long bomb at 4.50pm, and bomb disposal officers were sent to the scene.

The bomb was brought to the operational base of Marine South Division in Aberdeen and later thrown into the sea in Sham Wan Bay.

Nine people were evacuated from five houses nearby and the road was closed to traffic for an hour.

It is understood that the French Consul-General and the mother of actor and comedian Stephen Chiau Sing-chi live in the area where the bomb was found.

It was the third wartime bomb found in Hong Kong in less than two months. The first was discovered in Yau Ma Tei in February.

A few weeks later, another one was unearthed in Mid-Levels near Queen Mary Hospital.
