Consumer confidence hit

Sydney: Australia's high levels of consumer confidence have been severely dented by the latest turns of the screw by the Reserve Bank, raising doubts about the central bank's declared tightening mission. A key survey yesterday showed consumer sentiment down to its lowest level in five years, hurt by rising interest rates and uncertainty about upcoming tax reform.
