I refer to the letter from Dino Capelvenere, headlined, 'Give English-speaking sports fans a Nicam option' (South China Morning Post, April 13).
The Star Sports service, which viewers in Hong Kong are receiving, is a free satellite signal through the Satellite Master Antenna Television systems. This signal primarily targets the mainland market and as such accounts for the Mandarin commentary. Programmes on Star Sports which carry the Mandarin commentary include soccer, motor sports, tennis, badminton, table tennis and golf.
Unfortunately, we cannot, at this time, offer a dual sound option for the Star Sports service in Hong Kong. We do have an encrypted-pay service in English, but it is currently not available on the existing pay-TV platform in Hong Kong. Hong Kong's pay-television legislation licences are under review and ESPN Star Sports will pursue all avenues with the objective of making the service available on the new pay-TV platforms.
Regarding Formula One, our broadcast of the live telecast of all this season's grand prix races on Sundays, is in English.
Viewers who are not receiving this race in English should approach their residence management to adjust their satellite systems accordingly.
