Trucks must obey special speed rules

I refer to Schneps Marian's letter headlined, 'Dangerous' (South China Morning Post, April 15).

Both trucks and buses in Hong Kong are subject to maximum speed and lane restrictions.

Section 40 of the Road Traffic Ordinance (Cap.374) stipulates that on a road where the maximum speed limit is 70 km/h or above, the speed limit for a medium goods vehicle, heavy goods vehicle, or bus is 70 km/h.

Similar to other North American and European countries, medium goods vehicles, heavy goods vehicles and buses in Hong Kong under the Road Traffic (Expressway) Regulations are not permitted to use the offside lane of an expressway where there are two or more traffic lanes. Moreover, all vehicles on an expressway should drive only in the nearside lane unless the vehicle is overtaking.
