THE original 'love bug' greeted recipients with the message 'ILOVEYOU' in the subject field, and had an attachment called 'love-letter-for-you-text.vbs'.

Up to 60 mutant versions have since been detected. Among the most common is one with 'fwd: Joke' in the subject field and an attachment called 'Very Funny.vbs' Another variant has been modified in Lithuania. Its subject line reads: 'Susitikim shi vakara kavos puodukui', Lithuanian for 'Let's meet this evening for a cup of coffee'.

The virus has also been transmitted in a hoax Mother's Day message saying the recipient's credit card has been charged $326.92 for 'the Mother's Day diamond special'. The subject field says 'Mother's Day Order Confirmation' and the message says an invoice is attached. The attachment, mothersday.vbs, carries the virus.

Another version, titled 'Virus alert!!!' appears to come from Internet security technology company Symantec, but is a hoax warning and contains the virus.
