Local young people have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet others from different backgrounds at the 2000 Syndey Olympics by entering the Olympic Pioneers Programme competition.

The competition, organised by Coca-Cola China, is aimed at rewarding youths who come up with proposals to improve community service or enhance environmental protection through creative projects.

Young people aged between 15 and 21 should form a team of four to enter the contest. The winning team could win a trip to the Sydney Olympic Club between September 18 and 23.

Highlights of the trip include a cultural programme at the club, a visit to the Coca-Cola radio station, attending Olympic events, meeting Olympians and sightseeing in Sydney. Teenagers from more than 100 countries will be taking part.

The beverage company's country manager, Scott Price, said the programme aimed to raise the younger generation's awareness in working for a better environment and community.

The proposals can be in English or Chinese on a maximum of five pages (A4 size). The content should include objectives, expected benefits it would bring to society or the target group of people, how it worked, a time table, budget and target results. Proposals will be judged on ideas, organisation, implementation and results.

The first and second runners- up will receive cash prizes of $3,000 and $2,000, respectively. All finalists will be awarded certificates and special Coca-Cola Olympic souvenirs. Merit awards will be given to other outstanding projects.
