Pet monkey 'happy in new home'

Martin Wong

Kam Ying, the pet monkey seized from a 90-year-old street performer, is happily living with other monkeys in an animal centre, officials said. His former owner Chan Yat-biu, however, has fallen sick as he pines for his pet, a legislator said.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department released photographs of Kam Ying playing with her new companions at the Sheung Shui animal centre.

Monkey expert Wong Che-lok said the 2.5-year-old female rhesus macaque was learning survival techniques from other monkeys found in similar circumstances.

'It's important for the monkey, it is a wild animal. It should not be raised by a man,' Mr Wong said. They were looking for a zoo to provide a proper home for the monkey.

Democratic legislator Dr Law Chi-kwong said the Government should be more humane. 'The old man was sick yesterday after the long journey from his home to visit his beloved pet,' he said.
