Ferguson 50-point game all in vain
SEASONAL took a giant step towards the second leg of the triple crown in Hongkong basketball by crushing arch rivals Seapower 130-111 at the MacPherson Stadium last night to book their place in the Challenge Shield final, writes Norideen Kitchell.
Seasonal, who have already captured the Division A1 title, sprang to a 32-16 lead midway through the opening 20-minute half and never looked back.
With Mark Meredith showing uncanny accuracy from the outside in netting eight three-pointers for a personal score of 32, Seasonal extended their advantage to 67-43 at the interval.
They kept up the pressure after the break and pulled away to a 35-point lead before relaxing, opening the door for Seapower's Glenroy Ferguson to stage a one-man show in the second period.
Ferguson created history by becoming the first player ever to break the half century in local basketball, finishing the game with 53 points.
It was, however, not enough to save the defending champions from defeat as Seasonal, aided by 46 points from Meredith, held on for a 19-point triumph.
Seapower still have a chance of battling their way back into the final of the double-elimination tournament as they now go into the losers' pool from which the winners will play Seasonal in the title decider next Thursday.
