Hammer to strike early on

HAMMERHEAD could be one to note in the early exchanges of next season when he will start the campaign exceptionally well handicapped on his best form.

He has not won since an equitrack victory over the minimum sprint distance of 1,030 metres when he was rated 68 in Class Three. And yesterday he was beaten into fourth by Family Of Wah Yuen when competing from a mark of 43 in Class Four.

But it was his best run of the season and suggested that he still retains enough ability to be winning early on next season.

He will almost certainly be dropped another six or seven pounds, or maybe even more, during the close-season shuffling down in the handicap ratings which would make him eligible for Class Five events.

He makes even more appeal for next September and October as he is likely to come to hand pretty quickly.

Fat City started odds-on in Family Of Wah Yuen's race only to run a neck second. He may well have drawn clear of third-placed Best Runner but he certainly looked one to avoid at short prices in the future.

He hung in badly when coming under full racing pressure and did not look the most resolute of performers.
