A former school cleaner launched a $1 million District Court lawsuit seeking compensation for a respiratory disease he claimed he contracted from inhaling toxic gas at work.

Chan Cheuk-chuen, 50, brought the suit against Pok Oi Hospital Tang Pui King Memorial College in Yuen Long, saying he caught bronchiectasis as a result of his nine years' work in the college. The school argues that his claim is groundless as he cannot show a connection between his work and the disease, an inflammation of muscle and airways in the lungs. The hearing continues today.
