'Stars' shine bright at charity concert

THE stars were shining bright on Saturday when Hongkong's top performers came out in force to help raise funds for the renovation and extension of the mentally handicapped children's unit at the Caritas Medical Centre.

Temporarily-reunited Wynners, Leon Lai Ming, George Lam Chi-cheung, Sally Yeh, Vivian Lai Shui-yan and Little Cheng Pak-lam sang their hearts out during the RTHK-organised ''Project Sunshine Concert''.

Leon Lai opened the show with a dazzling performance of six numbers from his repertoire, and was good-naturedly ''twisting'' away to the music despite suffering from gastroenteritis.

He was followed by Vivian Lai, who stepped into Vivian Chow Wai-man's shoes to do her duet ''True Love in the Morrow'' with Leon Lai.

Despite some floundering with the lyrics, it was warmly applauded by the audience. Vivian Lai went on to sing her hit single ''Everyone Has an Ideal''.

Big sister Sally Yeh, dressed in a seductive black low-cut, gave away some red balloons while singing ''Red Dust'' before launching into a frantic number with her dancers in ''Out of Control''.

Yeh also performed a duet with her ''good friend'' George Lam. Lam broke his usual silence to make an impassioned plea for donations before jamming with the in-house band for his favourite songs such as ''No 70 Flower Street'' and ''Dare to Love''.

The Wynners, all smartly dressed in shiny vests, rounded up the evening's entertainment with a string of their golden oldies to the accompaniment of some firework for special effect.

Donors have forked out more $4.8 million which will be contributed to Project Sunshine to improve the living environment of 300 severely mentally handicapped children, aged from infancy to early adulthood.
