Dressed in a hot-pink superhero costume, lawyer Paul Tse Wai-chun leapt into the battle for a Legco seat in front of bemused Causeway Bay shoppers yesterday.

Launching his campaign for the Hong Kong Island constituency, the lawyer and sometime nude model said: 'Gimmicks are so important in the 21st-century world of lightning-fast communication.' Mr Tse is famous for headline-grabbing stunts including posing nude for magazine covers with his girlfriend, media pundit Pamela Pak Wan-kam. He is also known for his controversial move to advertise his firm's cut-price legal services, angering some lawyers who asked the Law Society to take action against him.

Led by a marching band, Mr Tse paraded from his office to the pedestrian island outside the Sogo department store. There, he took an oath to serve the SAR, help others and uphold the law.

However, in a comment somewhat at odds with this pledge and profession, Mr Tse said legislation did not benefit society. 'A society with no laws is the best place to live in,' he said.

Saying it was time for him to take over, Mr Tse said many incumbent legislators had neither his wit nor his knowledge.

And why the caped crusader outfit? He said it represented justice and boldness.
