The Education Department conducted 446 inspections at suspected unregistered schools and issued 151 warnings to some of them for the period from September 1999 to May this year requir ing them to comply with the law.

Also, the department has successfully charged 22 opera tors and 30 teachers at unreg istered schools since Septem ber 1996. It urged students to check whether the schools, in cluding tutorial schools, at which they intend to enrol were registered.

A department spokesman said that at such schools, the safety of the premises, sani tary conditions and teacher qualifications were not con trolled. Schools are required to display in a conspicuous place in each of their regis tered premises, the registra tion certificate showing the school's name in English and Chinese, address, registration number and a fees certificate, tuition fee per instalment and number of instalments.

A comprehensive school list is available at the department's Web site ( hk/ed).

The public is welcome to check with the department's School Development Teams under the Regional Education Offices (previously known as District Education Offices) or Registration Section to con firm the registration status of a school.
