Winning team to watch Olympics

The Olympic Pioneers Programme was jointly organised by Coca-Cola China and the Scout Association of Hong Kong to encourage youths to come up with new ideas on community service or environmental protection.

Ten outstanding project proposals have been selected for the finals.

The champion team will win a trip to the Sydney Olympic Club next month. The youths will take part in the club's cultural programme, attend Olympic events, meet the athletes and tour Sydney.

Ophelia Chan Chiu-ling, assistant chief commissioner of the Scout Association of Hong Kong, said it was a meaningful programme. 'It gives young people a chance to develop their talents and creativity. At the same time, they get a chance to serve the community or protect the environment.'

Ms Chan said response to the programme was encouraging.

'Some participants asked if they could join the programme individually, but one of our goals is to help participants build up team spirit.'

Ms Chan said that youths could learn to co-operate and compromise by working as a group.

'They can also make use of their leadership and organisational skills. It would be a valuable experience for them.'
