Almost all politicians in the United States belong to one of two political parties - the Republicans or the Democrats.
Presidential elections are held every four years. A few months before the elections are held, the two parties hold national conven tions to select their candidates for president.
Each state sends a group of delegates to the convention to vote for the candidate of their choice. The number of delegates depends on the size of the state's population.
A new president will be elected in November. He will take office early next year.
