Luck shines on Jumbo plunge

At least one sizeable and successful betting plunge enlivened proceedings yesterday as racing fans went bleary-eyed to the New Territories venue after the Mid-Autumn Festival.

In the second event, quinella odds on the winning combination of Jumbo Luck (14) and Recognition (6) were showing odds of 176-1 just minutes before the start of the 1,600-metre race.

After a titanic finish, bottomweight Jumbo Luck edged Recognition by the minimum margin. But those who backed the quinella received a shock when the dividend of $831 was posted. One punter said: 'It has taken a lot of money to do that. It would be interesting to know where it came from.'

In the final event, Scenic Event was slashed 3.5 points from 13-2, while Surplus came from 6-1 to 7-2. The money was close to the target, with Surplus flying home for second as the explosive Dollars And Sense sped away with the race.
