ICAC computer specialists will request an extra $300,000 in the next financial year to tackle rising hi-tech crimes. Principal investigator Louis Cheung Wah-bong said his specialist section had launched 71 operations involving 295 computers since its launch in April last year with $1 million in funding from the Government.

Most of the cases his six-member team investigated involved illegal betting over computer networks and credit card fraud, Mr Cheung said. Because such investigations often involved 'cracking' the hard drives of suspects' computers, his section needed money for upgrades.
