Always grateful to second home

I refer to the article headlined, 'Seoul's ping-pong diplomacy' (South China Morning Post, September 13) about me and my life in Seoul, South Korea.

I deeply regret that in the story I was quoted as saying that South Koreans were cunning and bad-hearted and that the country was small and the heart of the people was small.

These published quotes, which I deny having made, have had a deeply adverse impact on my reputation in the country.

They have left many South Koreans confused.

I deeply regret that because of the article the reputation of South Koreans has been adversely affected. I apologise for this.

Although South Korea cannot be compared with China, the country in which I was brought up, it is my second home and I will always feel grateful to the country.

ZHAO ZHIMIN

Seoul, South Korea

Editor's note: Mark O'Neill stands by the accuracy of his story.
