Still early days

I refer to the letter from John P. Burns headlined, 'Seeking answers on feasibility study' (South China Morning Post, September 28), on the extension of rail transport to the south side of Hong Kong Island.

No feasibility study was carried out for such a rail line. Any possible rail link to that area has not reached that stage of the study.

Railway Development Strategy 2000 recommends six component railway schemes which will give great benefit to Hong Kong. Most of these railway schemes have not proceeded to the feasibility study stage.

The Second Railway Development Study classified the South Hong Kong Island line as a possible long-term rail scheme. These long-term schemes do not command priority at this stage as the traffic demand has yet to warrant a mass carrier. Other schemes where there is already proven heavy traffic demand must take precedence over these long-term schemes in order that the maximum number of our citizens can benefit.
