Hongkong cargo with Miami port increases 89pc
CARGO throughput between Hongkong and the port of Miami rose 89 per cent to 205,072 tonnes in 1992, compared with 107,962 tonnes in 1991.
The territory ranks number seven in Miami's list of top 25 trading countries.
Port director Carmen Lunetta, said: ''With an integrated programme of new state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge service enhancements, the port of Miami continues to build upon its unique dual role as the cargo hub of Latin America, the Caribbean and hold its claims to be the cruise capital of the world.'' The boom in business with Miami continued worldwide, forcing the port to examine its operating philosophies and to make further enhancements to facilities.
These developments include a channel-deepening project costing about US$100 million which is due to be completed this year.
There is also expansion planned for on-dock refrigeration warehouse facilities and the ports seventh and eighth post-Panamax container cranes are on order.
In addition, four new roll-on/roll-off berths are being built, bringing the total to 14.
Completion is also near of the port's five-lane, fixed-span access bridge and related roadway improvements.
IN total, 55 carriers provide services to the Port of Miami with the most frequent sailings throughout Latin America and the Caribbean region.
Regular scheduled services run to and from more than 100 ports in the region and serves some 150 other ports elsewhere around the world.
