Policeman injured in roadblock crash
AN off-duty policeman was injured yesterday when a taxi carrying suspected illegal immigrants crashed through a makeshift roadblock he had erected to stop them.
Superintendent David Whyte was jogging through Chung Mei, Tai Po, at about 7am when he spotted two suspicious groups of men and women entering two cabs. When he approached, they sped off.
He called colleagues on a mobile phone and they set up a roadblock further down the highway at Bride's Pool.
But when the two cabs reached the roadblock, they did a U-turn. One, carrying four women and a man, was stopped after a brief chase.
The second headed back to Chung Mei, where Mr Whyte had set up a roadblock using roadwork signs.
The cab drove into the barricade, sending a sign flying into Mr Whyte. The officer was treated in hospital for a bruised right shoulder and released.
The taxi was finally stopped in Tai Mei Tuk, but the passengers had disappeared. Both taxi drivers, 36 and 39, and five passengers were arrested.
