Site addresses use Chinese characters

Jacky Wong

Chinese users unfamiliar with English can use Internet addresses with ease with the introduction of a new system.

The system, from the China Internet Network Information Centre, enables surfers to type Chinese characters into the address bar window to pinpoint a Web site.

The domain name system turns the numerical designation associated with each computer attached to the Internet, into a Web address that consists of a sequence of letters.

Chinese users who cannot read English often found it difficult to use Internet addresses because it required them to enter English alphabet letters.

With the new system, users will be able to write every part of the domain name, except the dot, using Chinese characters.
