Nearly 1,000 mainland banana farmers staged a protest yesterday against a stiff increase in farm taxes by a city government. Five farmers were reportedly injured in clashes with police during the protest in Zhangzhou City in Fujian province.

The Hong Kong-based Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy reported that the protesters from Nanqing County called for the resignation of their county chief, who imposed the tax increase, and democratic elections to elect a new chief.

An official at the city government headquarters confirmed the protest yesterday but refused to say if there were injuries, or reveal the scale of the demonstration.

A police officer at Zhangzhou Public Security Bureau confirmed that a special taskforce had been sent to the city government, but would not say if any protesters had been held.
