Derailed

I write in relation to recent public interest over the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation's proposal to construct a rail link over environmentally sensitive land.

I am an engineer with more than 20 years experience in the design and construction of civil engineering and building works, though I admit I do not have any experience on railways.

I have lived in Shenzhen for the past two years, travelling to Hong Kong for work - sometimes daily - during this period.

Therefore, I believe I can speak with some authority, through personal experience, on Shenzhen-Hong Kong traffic and engineering issues.

I am sure all parties concerned agree that improvement is urgently needed to cross-border traffic. It's on the method of achieving this goal that the various interested parties differ.

I would suggest that a new rail link, to Lok Ma Chau, may not be the best option at present. I believe that a major improvement to the road links there should be the way forward for the fastest and most economical solution.
