Bikers a menace on country park trails

I read with amusement the letter from 'Name And Address Supplied' headlined, 'Cyclists just wanting fair treatment', (South China Morning Post, November 21), asking why mountain bikers are restricted to only a few trails in the country parks.

It does not take a rocket scientist to work out that bikes hurtling around trails can do significant damage when they come into contact with hikers or walkers.

Ask any hiker if they have had accidents or close calls as inconsiderate bikers come up behind them without warning or pedal frantically towards them with no intention of slowing down.

Added to this the effects on the environment can be plainly seen where bikers are allowed to roam, as the trail is rutted and erosion accelerated.

I am sure that many bikers are considerate, kindly types and I have just been unlucky to meet the selfish ones. Maybe if they behaved in a better manner towards fellow country park users there would be more sympathy for their cause. Instead, many wonder how the bikers, able to afford the best technology and clothing, are unable to afford a bell.
