Hi-tech response to attack
Immigration officers will be provided with hi-tech outfits, including armoured suits and bulletproof vests fitted with miniature fire extinguishers. The upgrade follows August's arson attack at Immigration Tower which left two people dead and 50 injured.
A spokesman said the department acquired bullet-proof vests and metal detectors last month, while orders had been placed for other equipment, including shields and extendable batons.
The new stock includes armoured suits to defend against bomb and acid attacks, bulletproof vests fitted with small fire extinguishers and non-flammable uniforms. The uniforms will be worn on a daily basis, while the other equipment will be stored at Immigration Tower.
The spokesman said training courses with the new equipment started last month.
During the August attack, inflammable liquid was splashed around the reception room of the investigation division while it was packed with abode-seekers and immigration officers. The division is expected to relocate from Immigration Tower.
