Updated at 4.09pm:
A mainland-born worker has died following an accident on a boat off Po Toi island, police said on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old man, surnamed Choi, worked on a 24-metre-long fishing boat owned by a local fisherman, surnamed Po.

''The worker was trying to lift the net shortly after 6am when his head and leg got trapped by the winch,'' a police spokeswoman said.

The man, suffering head and arm injuries, was sent to Aberdeen Marine Police headquarters. He was later transferred to Queen Mary hospital and certified dead at 7.21am.

There were no suspicious circumstances, the spokeswoman said.

A Marine Department spokesman said: ''A few accidents on fishing boats are reported to us each year. We will look into this accident to see if there are any lessons to be learnt. If necessary, we will warn boat owners and workers to take precautions.''
