Shopping with . . .DAVID WU
David Wu joined Channel [V] (formerly MTV) in 1992 and hosts two shows a week - Go West and Chinese Top 20 Video Countdown.
Lesser known is the fact that the American-born, Taiwan-educated Wu has also starred in more than 50 film and TV movies and played Bruce Lee in an ATV mini-series.
'I gotta have a reason to go shopping - I never shop just for the sake of shopping. For sporting goods I shop at Nike, mainly in Taipei, but also in the US, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Macau and even Thailand [www.nike.com].
'I usually don't have to pay - I just call them up and tell them what I want, basketball shoes mainly. If I'm in a rush I'll sometimes fork out, which I hate to do. The more you save the more you earn, right?
'I go back to the States and buy football and NBA sport jerseys of any Seattle team like the Seahawks and SuperSonics. I usually shop in malls, Bellevue Square [Bellevue, Washington 98004, Tel: 1425 454 2431 or www.bellevuesquare.net] in particular as it's close to my home. It's pretty hip - you name it - Nordstrom, Gucci, Chanel, J Crew, Gap, Nike, Athlete's Foot, Eddie Bauer, Abercrombie & Fitch, typical American stuff.
'I have a lot of autographed basketballs, 12 or 13, which I get personally through meeting stars in my job. People like Shaquille O'Neal, Moses Malone and Grant Hill.
'For the show and also generally I always wear casual stuff - jeans, shorts, T-shirts. If someone's sponsoring me and it's suitable, I'll wear it, otherwise I go to Polo Ralph Lauren [Shop 202 Ocean Terminal, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2376 2881 or go to www.polo.com].
'In Taipei I go to US66 [Chung Hsiao East Rd, Section 4] which sells genuine labels like Abercrombie & Fitch, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein and Polo at discounted prices. The staff call me up when they've something they think I'll like.
'I love electronic gadgetry and boys' toys - car stereos, MDs, DVDs, TVs, speakers - any new thing that comes out. The next thing I want to buy is a Pioneer 63-inch wide-screen HDTV [high-definition TV] or the 50-inch plasma vision, the kind you hang on the wall. For the past 10 years I've been going to Standard Audio & Photo Supplies [Shop 303 Ocean Centre, 5 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2735 0005] which has decent no-frills prices and if something goes wrong the staff will change it, hassle free. Kenneth Tam is always very helpful.
'I love cars. At the moment in the States I have a Volvo V70 cross-country wagon and a SL320 convertible Mercedes-Benz, while in Taiwan I drive a QX4 Infinity - it's sort of a glorified Lexus or Nissan.
'I recommend buying cars in America. In Hong Kong they're twice the price and in Singapore, three times. I'm a value shopper and don't mind paying a little bit extra, but 200 per cent - are you nuts?
'I buy magazines - American ones like Entertainment America, Premiere, Car & Driver, Road & Track, Defense & Weaponry - from Fleet Arcade [Fenwick Pier, 1 Lung King Street, Wan Chai] which has good prices.
'Beauty products? Hell no! Just gel, face cream, deodorant and a cologne called American Skin.
'Basically I buy the basics. I need a bed, air-conditioning and audio visual. The rest can go to heck. If it works, I'm fine.'
