Legislator heads women's group

Liberal Party legislator Sophie Leung Lau Yau-fun was appointed yesterday to head the new Women's Commission, which will advise the Government when officials make policies.

Mrs Leung, who represents the textiles and garment sector in Legco and is honorary vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Women, said one of her priorities would be to ensure women in lower-income groups had the education, awareness and opportunities to enter whatever field they chose.

'Every woman should have the opportunity to take part in society by her own choice, either to take up a job or participate in society in another way - to reach her potential and build her self respect,' she said.

Mrs Leung is particularly concerned with family violence issues and problems faced by new immigrants. She said the commission's focus would be determined by all members at its first meeting next week.

But legislator Cyd Ho Sau-lan of The Frontier said Mrs Leung did not understand the situation of working-class women.

'It seems, from Mrs Leung's speeches, that she feels she has worked hard to struggle to the top and expects other women to have the same achievements,' Ms Ho said.

'I hope Mrs Leung will be more understanding towards women who may have more restrictions in education, family situation or in terms of resources, and keep an eye on community support for these women.'

Ms Ho was disappointed that several academics who were actively involved in women's issues were not appointed to the commission.

Chief Secretary for Administration Anson Chan Fang On-sang announced the establishment of the commission in May last year.
