Hard knock for jock as birds fly nostalgia coop

SPARE a thought for the quick-witted, fast-talking Keith Kwan - now metamorphosed as an FM Select jock - who spent all this week in Singapore as part of the Cathay Pacific International DJ Swap.

He was overcome with excitement when earlier in the week he arrived in the Garden City and checked into the Hilton.

For as a young kid living with his parents in Singapore, Keith used to be a regular at the hotel's coffee shop, where a special table was always reserved for the Kwan family by the aviary, which had pride of place in the restaurant.

The radio man, who was hosting the morning show on Singapore Broadcasting Corporation's FM 95, even claimed he knew every one of the exotic birds by name.

But when he rushed expectantly into the restaurant to renew acquaintance with his erstwhile ornithological friends he discovered that the birds had flown. The aviary was no more.

Muttering to himself that nostalgia is not what it used to be, Keith sat himself down at his table of old and drowned his sorrows in a bowl of bird's nest soup.
