Scandalous

I refer to Ray McGuire's letter (South China Morning Post, January 17) about exploding tyres on our expressways.

Having been a recent near victim of a large lump of rubber (at least one metre in length ) bursting off the tyre of a container truck in the 'slow' lane of the Yuen Long Highway and slamming into the central reserve barrier immediately in front of my car, I wholeheartedly support his views.

It is scandalous that commercial vehicles, with tyres obviously long past safe, serviceable life, can operate apparently without check.

Effective action to curb this menace is long overdue, as is cracking down on faulty rear lights which also affect significant numbers of these vehicles.
