Success in bridging the cultural divide

As one of the 'gweilo cops' responsible for policing some of the 'raunchy, triad-infested' bars in Kowloon, it was refreshing to read an article in the South China Morning Post Features section ('Canto-crawl before you can talk', February 2).

We rarely come across expatriate patrons in the premises we check, despite the fact that, as the article pointed out, prices are half of those found in bars in the expatriate hang-outs on Hong Kong Island. Many of the bars are far from raunchy and not necessarily triad-infested. In fact, the patrons are generally less aggressive, and certainly less hostile, than those in Lan Kwai Fong.

I am impressed by the original approach to language teaching taken by Ms Berg and the adventurous spirit of her students. Their efforts are a positive step in bridging some of the cultural differences and misunderstandings between expatriates and locals that are voiced so often in letters from SCMP readers.
