Backstreet Boys Web site offers Valentine messages

To promote their next single, The Call, from the album Black and Blue, the Backstreet Boys have vowed to woo their legion of fans this Valentine's Day by phone.

Faithful fans can now visit the band's official online store at www.backstreetboysdirect.com and send or receive a Valentine's Day message from the boy of their choice, reports Rolling Stone.

For US$4.95 (about HK$40), any fan living in the United States can order a phone call to be made any time before February 14. Each call will be billed to the sender's credit card. The site promises that they will charge buyers only for the connections that they are able to make.

Though the messages are prerecorded, one can still personalise them. According to the site's instructions, personalisation is strongly recommended, to ensure that the phone call is delivered to the correct person.

The promotion follows their offering of a pewter heart charm for sale in conjunction with the release of their single Shape of My Heart.

Fans of the Gladiator star Russell Crowe and his band, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, are pondering whether one of his new songs is about ex-flame Meg Ryan.

The song Wendy contains lyrics such as, 'Wendy's got a little boy/ Someone to keep in mind for the future/ She's got no husband who cares'.

Ryan, who endured a storm of media attention when she split from her husband of nine years, Dennis Quaid, and went public with her affair with Crowe, has a son, Jack.

Another Grunt song Other Ways of Speaking was rumoured to be about Jodie Foster, another of Crowe's rumoured ex-flames.
