Plenty of food for thought

TO dinner last night at Va Bene (a branch will open in Jakarta soon, I hear), hosted by barrister Alan Hoo, where the guests included Lord Walton, a pre-eminent British neurologist whose CV, I gather, runs to 22 pages.

Sitting next to the famous neurologist, I was intrigued to see him take a call on a mobile phone and talk away without a care as he fixed himself a game of golf for the next day. So much for all that nonsense that using a mobile phone could cause brain cancer.

Another guest was prominent New York lawyer Paul Rooney, who represented film director Woody Allan in the recent marital set-to with actress Mia Farrow.

Naturally, the dinner-table conversation turned to the question of marriage, at which point Lord Walton looked across at his Queen's Counsel host and said: ''Remember, Alan, the first 47 years are the hardest.'' Hmmm.
