Away from the glare of the big events, Multizen and Mentor should pay their way in the near future. In the Great Success Handicap, Multizen did not have the tactical speed to match Diamond Talents and had to settle for second in a deceptive photo finish. When the leaders put on the pace at the 500m, Multizen was left standing but knuckled down and made up several lengths in the straight.

Mentor was box-seated in the Superior Gold Handicap, but that turned out to be a disadvantage when the serious racing commenced at the 400 metres and Craig Williams was forced to steady back on Mentor, then come outside the leaders. Other runners had already reached full momentum while that was going on, but Mentor battled away admirably to be beaten just a length and a half.
