Legco take note

I refer to the report headlined 'Phone-call surgeon in the clear' (South China Morning Post, April 12). I am sure many readers like me were left with doubts about the case of Dr Tung Hiu-ming.

It would appear the Medical Council does not believe that when a doctor takes a portable phone into an operating theatre and answers a call, it is misconduct. Also, the council decided the doctor's testimony was reliable but that of the patient, who claimed the doctor 'had been talking on his phone about buying a BMW', was not.

It does not appear, from the Post report, that other medical staff who must have assisted in the operation were called to give their accounts of the incident. This hearing shows it is time for Legislative Councillors to find a way to improve the mechanism for medical complaints.
