I refer to the article headlined 'Four! And he's only just starting' (South China Morning Post Sport, April 10) about Tiger Woods and whether he achieved the famed Grand Slam after winning the Masters.

What Tiger has accomplished over the past year is nothing short of phenomenal. He has done what no one has been able to do in the history of golf: own all four Grand Slams at the same time. The views of Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer concerning the Grand Slam strike me as comments from worried men who are afraid their positions as the greatest golfers of all time are in jeopardy. They are playing down Tiger's accomplishment by claiming it is not a Grand Slam. The man has all four trophies on his mantelpiece at the same time. When you possess all four trophies at once, that is considered a Grand Slam. Technicalities - such as it wasn't achieved in the same calendar year - are irrelevant.

I can understand why Nicklaus and Palmer are jealous, because Tiger is only 25 and has already surpassed anything they did throughout their careers.
