Re-take prospect adds pressure

I am a Secondary Seven student and one of the candidates who took the Hong Kong A-level pure mathematics exam which contained an error in one of the questions (Post, April 24). Pure mathematics is regarded as one of the most demanding subjects at A-level. It requires hard work and a well-trained mathematical mind. The incident left many students, who have those qualities, thinking they could lose the A grade or B grade they were aiming for. They have asked for a re-take, and given the backing of Legislative Councillors this may happen.

One of the complaints was the error made it unfair for those who had spent a long time trying to work out the answer to the question. I don't agree with this. All students took the same exam with the same paper containing the same mistake. The Hong Kong Examinations Authority (HKEA) made a mistake but that did not cause unfairness.

The exam was not only a test of knowledge and skills, but of candidates' ability to handle different situations. The paper only lasted three hours. Why weren't those who spent an hour on the question smart enough to allocate their time properly?

On the day after the exam was held, the HKEA announced firmly that a re-take would not happen, which was a great relief. To those who don't have to take the exam but continue to give their own thoughtless opinions on the subject, I would like to point out that every A-level exam is tough. It is not only a matter of understanding textbooks, but also handling the mental strain. Knowing that even one mistake can cost you a grade and consequently a place at university, students feel tremendous pressure before an exam. A re-take would undoubtedly be even more stressful.

During the debate on this matter, I have read much criticism of the HKEA. Please, politicians, put yourselves in the exam-takers' position before making statements. This is not politics but an issue dealing with the future of 9,000 young men and women.

For many students who took the pure mathematics paper, A-levels are not yet over. Given the fear of a re-take,

I cannot fully concentrate on the subjects ahead.

I hope the HKEA will make suitable arrangements for candidates as soon as possible, without being influenced by politicians and making students' interests the primary concern.
