English rider Tony Culhane managed to win his first Hong Kong races yesterday and one of his beaten mounts on the day is ready to follow suit and break his maiden status. The David Oughton-trained Mr Basketball was given his chance to win the Lok Ma Chau Handicap over 1,400 metres, and loomed dangerously at the 200-metre mark. He wasn't quite good enough to finish it off on the day but his turn is coming. It was his ninth start and he is yet to win, but his effort to be beaten just under two lengths in fourth placing was yet another in a steady sequence of improved performances in recent starts and another similarly-weak Class Four event would be right up his alley.
