Denim down, corduroy cool

Hong Kong (May 3): Slowed down demand for demin fabric is forcing the closure of some of the new weaving factories which sprang up during the boom - but that does not spell doom for the industry.

Manufacturers said yesterday the fate of factories is causing concern to the whole textile sector as denim led the recovery of the textile industry towards the end of last year.

There are suggestions that corduroy may take the place of denim. This will, however, represent a limited opportunity for the mills, principally because corduroy is not a year-round fabric but is used mainly for autumn wear.

Jet lag debate

Washington (May 14): An environmental group asked the U.S. Civil Aeronautics Board to order two airlines to quit claiming the Concorde supersonic passenger plane could eliminate 'jet lag' because of its great speed.

The Environmental Defence Fund contended that the 1,400 mile-per-hour jet actually would increase jet lag since it traversed time zones more quickly.
