Time to attend to bad manners

Recently, when my family and I went to Wong Tai Sin to visit my grandparents we decided to have lunch in a Chinese restaurant.

We had trouble locating a table, but after several minutes we found a four-seat table; the thing was, there were five of us.

The waitress made no response to my request for another chair, so I had to find it myself. PLUS

there were crumbs sticking to my bowl.

I asked the waitress to change it for me, but guess what? I caught a glimpse of her in a nook; she was using her hands to 'clean' the bowl and then she wanted to give it back to us.

From these - and other experiences - I realise how impolite Hong Kongers are. In the past, when people said Hong Kongers should improve their manners I thought: 'We're not that bad.'

Now I find we DO need to improve our manner.

I think this problem is serious, and it's time for us to face it.

No matter how much the Hong Kong Tourism Association tries to promote Hong Kong as a great city, tourists will feel disappointed or cheated when they come here and find the services and manners are far different from what the promotions show.

I suggest the only way to improve is for the Government to educate people about good manners when they are young.

It's time to take action.
