BACK on the local beat after his escapade in Dublin serenading Mother Teresa, Hongkong cop Gerard Tannam, an off-duty rock singer, calls to talk about something called ''Out Of The Ashes''.

Nothing to do with England's current cricketing woes (Gerard is too sensitive an Irishman to intrude on personal grief). It refers to an exhibition by Scottish artist Sarah-Jane Selwood at the Hongkong Convention Centre on Friday.

Staged by his company Arts 'N' Noise, Gerard even promises that should we attend, he will not break into song. Promises, promises.
