Counsellors need support

ABOUT six months after I came to Hongkong my husband left me for another woman. I truly believe that if it had not been for the free service provided by the Marriage Mediation Counselling Service of the Catholic Marriage Guidance Advisory Council, I wouldhave suffered some kind of breakdown.

Sadly, I have recently learnt that the Hongkong Government does not recognise this service and that although money is granted by the Jockey Club, the amount is not regular, which means the quality of the service cannot be improved nor the service expanded.

I have been helped by two wonderful, intelligent and professional counsellors to put events into perspective, to cope with my responsibilities, and to build up my very fragile sense of self-worth which was delivered such a blow by the divorce.

The break-up of a marriage is a desperately sad, lonely and confidence-destroying time. As the divorce rate continues to increase, we need more counsellors, not only to pick up the broken pieces, but to help us build more and stronger relationships next time.
