Wang Yishi may have the title of 'honorary citizen' of Thiais City, France, but the Sichuan-born painter has never forgotten his roots. One of China's most established and prolific painters, Yishi moved to Paris in 1989 and has since become an active bridge in the artistic exchange between two countries - consulting on Chinese-themed exhibitions held in Paris' museums while wowing collectors and museums alike with his distinctively colourful contemporary works (above).

Gallery 13, which represents Yishi in Hong Kong, is showing a collection of the master's latest output - a combination of nostalgic images with a modern take. Wang combines fine gongbi (thin lines) work with broad strokes of strong colour, paying homage to his home town.

Paintings Exhibition Of Wang Yishi. Gallery 13, Shop D-2, UG/F, Far East Finance Centre, 16 Harcourt Road, Admiralty. Until July 19. Monday to Friday 11am-6.30pm; Saturday 11am-5pm. Tel: 2868 3995.

Can you make a feminist statement with needlework and crochet? A group of senior students at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology - Ping Ping, Carol Lee, Carment Wong and Liu Sze Wai - believe there is power in needles and thread. Their joint exhibition, Girls' Things, attempts to show more than their handicraft skills, with installations and paintings exploring the role of women in society. The results are quite unlike anything produced in home economics classes. In fact, for these women artists, the more delicate the material, the stronger the message.

Montblanc and Nokia Gallery, Fringe Club. Until July 3. Monday to Saturday, 12pm-10pm. Tel: 2521 7251.
