Two mainlanders were stranded in waters north of Lantau Island on Thursday morning after their boat sank in stormy weather, police said.

One man swam ashore and rang police at Sham Shek Tsuen pier on Lantau, saying the other man was missing. The boat was later found near Sha Chau, an island outside Hong Kong's territorial waters.

The missing man was washed ashore and found at the edge of Chek Lap Kok airport's runway by police.

Both men were taken to Princess Margaret Hospital. One of the men, surnamed Chan, was discharged. The condition of the other was unknown.
