Updated at 4.32pm: The president of the SAR's Olympic Committee, Timothy Fok Tsun-ting on Monday became the first Hong Kong delegate to be elected a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Mr Fok, a leading light in Beijing's campaign for the 2008 Olympics, was one of six new members chosen during an election in Moscow, including the son of the out-going IOC President, Juan Antonio Samaranch.
Jacques Rogge, a Belgian surgeon, replaces Mr Samaranch to become the IOC's eighth president in its 107-year history.
''My second thoughts are for my four fellow competitors. We had a long and very dignified campaign,'' he said. ''In every competition, there is going to be one winner. In this competition, there is no loser.''
Hong Kong's only member of the Beijing Olympic bid committee, Mr Fok, broke down in tears in Moscow on Friday night as the mainland swept to victory in the race to host the Games.
