Police were on standby yesterday as Housing Department officials began clearing a squatter area in Kowloon City.
The Inverness Road operation was met with a peaceful protest by disgruntled residents and shop owners.
At 8am, more than 100 residents gathered at the front entrance to the village after blocking other entrances with trucks and rubbish. Talks between them and Housing Department officers broke down at 1pm and police moved in to help.
Twenty-three premises were sealed throughout the day, with about 30 more to go. The 2.26 hectare site will house a 740-flat public housing estate by 2006. Some shop owners were unhappy about compensation offered, while 67 households failed to pass the Government income means test to qualify for public housing settlements.
