From bad to verse
Margaret Ng's brilliant summary of the present political situation in Hong Kong ('Contemptuous odds,' South China Morning Post, July 17) brings to mind G. K. Chesterton's description of the British gentleman civil-servant rulers of his time:
'They have given us into the hand of
new unhappy Lords . . .
They fight by shuffling papers; they
have bright dead alien eyes;
They look at our labour and laughter
as a tired man looks at flies.'

The bee's whiskers
Tim Hamlett's reference to 'the bee's knees' in his column ('Beware: Press Council is Frankenstein's monster', South China Morning Post, July 23) might have puzzled some readers. Allow me to clarify: put simply, the bee's knees is exactly the same thing as 'the cat's pyjamas'.
